Crystal Reports is a software application for gathering and displaying business information in a few different formats. Report creation can be done by obtaining data from a variety of sources such as databases, spreadsheets, flat files and so on. Crystal Reports is an end-user reporting tool which is used for creating business information reports. Users can use predefined templates or create their own, flexible document design with custom layouts, headers, footers and styles. Crystal Reports can help organizations achieve greater efficiency by making it easier for users to quickly locate the business information they need to make decisions. The software generally takes data from various sources and formats it in a more readable format. It also has the ability to show changes in data on different levels of detail, creating immediate insights into performance over time across multiple dimensions. It uses the latest data visualization technology to present results in easy-to-digest tables, graphs, charts and maps. Once completed, reports can be published on the organization's intranet and on Websites and distributed to users using email. Users can likewise store reports within their personal files. Crystal Reports is based on technology that was originally developed by Multidata Systems for use in its Multidata Crystal Reports product line. Multidata Systems was later acquired by Crystal Decisions, which was subsequently acquired by Crystal Decisions AG in 2008. On February 9, 2011, the company announced it would acquire the 100 million dollar enterprise reporting vendor, Platinum Technologies Incorporated. At time of acquisition Platinum Technologies reported 5100 customers using Platinum Professional Edition with 2200 of those being Fortune 1000 companies. Following the acquisition by SAP, the only version available is only available as part of SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI (formerly SAP BusinessInformation Warehouse). The first version of Crystal Reports was called "Multi-Dimensional Reporting for Windows" (MRW) and was released in 1988. It was ported to IBM OS/2 and other platforms in 1989. Since then, major new versions have been released every 18 to 24 months. Originally, the product ran on MS-DOS; then Microsoft Windows; then Microsoft Windows CE; then Unix (Solaris, HP-UX), Mac OS (Power Macintosh), DOS again (Windows 3. 1), and a variety of embedded operating systems. A few years ago Microsoft announced that Crystal Reports would be supported on Windows CE, and a version of Crystal Reports 97 was released for the Pocket PC platform. In January 2008, SAP AG acquired Crystal Decisions from Symantec Corporation. The latest version is Crystal Reports 2010, which has been enhanced with new features that include improved integration with SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse (BW) and SAP BusinessObjects.Crystal Reports is widely supported by third party software vendors that supply data source drivers (ODBC type 3). cfa1e77820
