Satyagraha is a Hindi drama film with English subtitles. The film was released in India on 12 August 2012 and won the Golden Lotus Award for Best Production Design at the 54th National Film Awards. The movie is an adaptation of both Mohandas Gandhi's novel and his 1936 Satyagraha in South Africa, and chronicles the rise of Gandhi from 1894 to 1934, focusing on his relationship with big business, especially the British Raj. The film was jointly produced by John Abraham through Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and UTV Motion Pictures. The original music has been done by A R Rahman while lyrics have been penned by Prasoon Joshi. The film begins with the Indian National Congress meeting of 1928 at Allahabad, where Gandhi had arrived to attend. The various problems of India are discussed, and it is resolved that Gandhi will lead the next Non-Cooperation Movement, which will involve spinning cloth using charkha at home instead of buying British textiles. After this meeting, Gandhi's aide-de-camp Chimanlal visits his house in Mumbai to see if he needs any help for this movement. At his house he meets his son Harilal who is an alcoholic due to his failure to practice law. He also meets Kasturba who has been bedridden after a stroke. They are unable to pay her hospital bill, and she dies. Gandhi however leaves for Champaran, where he meets his former companions in the Congress movement. On the train to Champaran, he meets a Brahmin family, who welcome him by giving him some home-made sweets. The picture shifts back to Baroda in 1934 where Harilal has been practicing law and Kasturba is still bedridden with a recurrent illness. She is visited by her friend Kamladevi who tells her that Gandhi has died but is not dead. While Harilal is toying with his secretary Baburao Patel, Kasturba reads a newspaper and tells him that she has been informed that Gandhi is alive. She then tells him about the Non-Cooperation Movement. Harilal goes to Champaran and meets Kasturba's daughter Manu, who is taking care of her mother. He also meets Rangaiah Naidu, general secretary of the Congress party and his sons Uday and Prakash. The latter narrates about the problems between the Indian National Congress and the British Raj: "The Mughals had made allowances for local customs but we, we were totally corrupted by them". Harilal is worried about his mother but does not see any way to help her. He meets Chimanlal and tells him that he cannot stay at his house, and instead needs a place where he can be near his mother. He gives money to Chimanlal for this purpose, and starts work at a khadi shop in Champaran. The story shifts back to Baroda where Kasturba's illness has worsened but she refuses to see anyone other than Harilal. Rangaiah Naidu visits Kasturba and tries to convince her about the troubles of India but she does not let go of her determination to die in peace with Harilal present. cfa1e77820
